The starting salary for a Management Trainee (MT) at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is Rs. 40,000 – 1,40,000 per month (E-1 grade), according to the latest recruitment notification (Advt. No. 07/2023).

This base salary is further supplemented by various allowances and benefits, including:

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): Currently at 43.8%, subject to periodic revisions.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): 18% of the basic salary for the Goa location.
  • Perks & Allowances: 35% of basic salary.
  • Other benefits: Medical facilities, Provident Fund, Gratuity, Superannuation benefits, etc., as per GSL policy.

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is a government-owned shipyard. It functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Although it was originally established by the Portuguese colonial government in Goa, it became a public sector undertaking after Goa’s liberation in 1961.

The Indian Government owns the Goa Shipyard Limited.

  • 1957: Established by the Portuguese colonial government as “Estaleiros Navais de Goa” to serve Goa’s growing mining industry. Primarily built barges and other smaller vessels.
  • 1961: Following Goa’s liberation by India, the shipyard came under Indian control and was renamed Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
  • 1960s-1970s: GSL shifts its focus to building vessels for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, playing a crucial role in increasing India’s maritime defence capabilities. Key projects include patrol boats, landing craft, and tugs.
  • 1980s-1990s: GSL expands its portfolio, constructing offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) and larger ships. Modernization efforts begin, with technological advancements in shipbuilding incorporated.
  • 2000s-Present: GSL continues to diversify its offerings, building sophisticated vessels like fast attack crafts, missile corvettes, and hydrofoils. It has become a leading shipyard in India, exporting vessels to other countries like Yemen.
